, 31st of October 2016

Sometimes it’s those simple day-to-day conversations that can really trip you up when learning a new language. We decided to decode and spell out a few handy conversations to make your life a little bit easier…

Bij de supermarkt (at the supermarket)…

Customer: “Hoi, goedemiddag.” (Hello, good day.)

*bleep bleep bleep* (scanning items)

Cashier: “Heeft u een bonuskaart?” of “Spaart u zegeltjes?” (Do you have a bonus card or do you save discount stamps?)

Customer: “Ja” of “nee” (yes or no) “Mag ik er een tasje bij?”  (Can I have a plastic bag?)

Cashier: “Ja, natuurlijk. Dat is vijftien cent.” (Yes, of course, that will be 15 cents)

Cashier: “Wilt u de bon?” (Do you want the receipt?)

Customer: “Ja, graag” of “Nee, dank u” (Yes, please or no, thank you)

Bij het café (at the café)…

Customer: “Mag ik betalen?” (Can I pay?)

Cashier: “Dat is dan drieëendertig vijftig.” (That will be 33,50.)

Customer: “Kan ik pinnen? Doe maar vijfendertig euro.” (Can I pay with pin? Round it up to 35 euros)

Cashier: “Ja, dank u wel.” (Yes, thanks.)

Bij de fietsenmaker (at the bike shop)…

Customer: “Goedemiddag” (Good day)

Fietsenmaker: “Goedemiddag. Wat is er aan de hand?” (Good day. What is the problem?)

Customer: “Mijn band is lek” (My tire is flat)

Fietsenmaker: “Prima. U kunt hem/de fiets morgen middag ophalen.” (Okay. You can pick it/the bike up tomorrow at midday)

Customer: “Hoeveel kost het?” (How much will it cost?)

Fietsenmaker: “Acht euro” (8 euros)

Customer: “Oké. Bedankt. Tot morgen!” (Okay. Thanks. See you tomorrow!)

De buren begroeten (small talk with the neighbour)…

Buurman: “Goedemorgen!” (Good morning)

Buurvrouw: “Goedemorgen! Lekker weertje, hè?” (Good morning. Nice weather, huh?)

Buurman: “Ja, heerlijk.” (Yeah, wonderful!)

Buurvrouw: “Alles goed?” (Is everything good?)

Buurman: “Ja, prima. En met jou?” (Yes, fine. And with you?)

Buurvrouw: “Ja, goed, beetje druk.” (Yeah, good, a bit busy.)

Buurman: “Fijne dag!” (Have a good day!)

Buurvrouw: “Jij ook!” (You too!)

Now that you’re armed with some simple conversations, go forth and practise one of them!
